Taking to the skies this summer?

Traveling the world is undeniably fun – but the plane ride? Not so much, especially for your skin. IMG_9102 Have you ever boarded an airplane looking fabulous and landed looking like you’ve aged 10 years? Well, you’re not alone. Airplane cabins have extremely low humidity that can cause our skin to become dehydrated very quickly. Whenever the environment is moisture-free (as with recirculated air in a plane cabin), the air actually draws moisture from wherever it can, including the skin. Not only will dry skin become drier but oily skin can actually become even oilier to compensate for dehydration. Seems crazy, but it’s true. When skin loses its water, it tends to produce more oil to compensate for the loss. So what can we do to look after our skin? Below are a few of my simple skincare tips for air travel. flying-beauty-sam-james GET YOUR SKIN FLIGHT-READY //Forego the foundationLadies, do I dare say it? To help our skin, we need to avoid wearing makeup while on an airplane. If you absolutely cannot go bare faced, it’s time to make some compromises. Make sure to avoid any foundation or powders as they definitely contribute to the drying of the skin. //Apply a serum before boarding your flightSince the cabin of airplanes have extremely low humidity, you must load your skin up with as much hydration and protection as possible. Apply a serum to help deliver moisture deep within the layers of the skin while providing a seal to help the skin retain its moisture. We recommend our rejuvenating Botanical Bliss Facial Serum. //Don’t forget the sunscreenSeems crazy that we would need to be concerned about the sun’s rays while sitting on an airplane but think about it—it’s when we are flying that we are the closest to the sun. So wear your moisturizer with SPF, shut the shade and choose an aisle seat over a window seat if you can. CARING FOR YOUR SKIN WHILE ON THE PLANE //Swap your mist. Whatever you do, don’t mist your skin with an h2o hydrating spray during flight. When the air is dry it looks for water wherever it can. So, when you spray your skin with a mist on a plane, the air literally robs skin of the applied moisture. Instead, try a natural aloe based or rosemary mist. Our Sea Mineral Mist is formulated without water, making it the perfect on-the-go hydrating solution. //Drink plenty of water. While drinking water isn't the most efficient way to hydrate the skin, it’s still important for the health of your cells. Aim for a glass of water for each hour you are in the air. //Hydrate your skin. Make sure to have a rich moisturizer conveniently on hand throughout the flight. Find a natural one that won’t dry you out with alcohols and preservatives, and apply a few times during your trip. The longer the flight the more frequently you should moisturize – your skin will thank you. //Embrace the Au Naturale Look. It’s best not to pile on makeup before leaving your flight because it hasn’t been washed in a while, and it will only cause clogged pores and breakouts. The best, really, if you’re concerned about how you look (but really, give yourself a break – you were on a long flight!), just apply some lip colour and slip on a pair of sunglasses and tie your hair up; you’ll instantly look fresher.
