Dry brushing 101

IMG_9011Not only is dry brushing becoming popular in spa treatments, it is gaining popularity in at-home beauty routines, as well. It seems as if every woman with super-glowy skin is doing it. Yet, for the beginner, dry brushing can seem kind of counterintuitive-- rubbing a dry, scratchy brush all over your delicate skin? Yeah riiiiight. But I promise you, once you get used to it, you will never want to stop. I have been dry body brushing for about 10 months now and I am officially hooked. I especially love the way it wakes me up in the mornings-- it feels like I’m waking up my skin cells and energizing my system. Plus my skin is softer than it’s ever been! For something that costs next to nothing (my brush cost me $7) and takes almost no time at all (3-5 mins max), regular dry brushing can make a huge difference in how your skin looks. What is dry brushing? If you’re not familiar with dry brushing, it’s the process of brushing the skin on your entire body with a rough-bristled brush that’s designed to remove dead skin cells and stimulate circulation. Your skin is the largest organ on your body so just as you detox your insides it makes sense to do the same for your outer layer. By buffing away dead skin, you stimulate your lymph system and aid in the releasing of toxins. Over time your skin will begin to glow, cellulite will disappear along with stretch marks and other scarring in some cases. Your skin naturally sheds over time but dry brushing is an invigorating way to help the process along. What are the benefits of dry brushing? When done on a regular basis, dry brushing boasts a number of impressive benefits: IMG_9012 How to dry brush effectively So how do you start? First you need to buy a dry brush, preferably one made from natural materials. Make sure the bristles are firm but not too harsh as you want to stimulate your skin cells not tear your skin off! Once you have your brush and you are ready to start, it’s time to get going. Start by brushing the soles of your feet and then begin working your way up your body, brushing your skin gently with long strokes toward your heart, which is the way the lymph system flows naturally. Once you get to your stomach start using a clockwise motion. Make sure to get the sensitive skin between your thighs and under your arms to really get the blood flowing and the lymph draining. Lastly be sure to hit all areas of your skin. That’s it your done! Tips: 1// Do it first thing in the morning or before you shower – that way you can wash any dead skin away. 2// Avoid sensitive areas like your face or chest. 3/ Always follow up with a moisturizer that nourishes the skin. Coconut oil is perfect for this. 4// Give it at least 30 days. As with most holistic practices, it takes a little bit of time to see results. But once the results are there you will feel a big difference! Happy Dry Brushing! xo Kimberley
